In August 1967, a press release from the UK Electric Vehicle Association stated, without apparent irony, that Britain had more battery-electric vehicles on its roads than the rest of the world combined. Almost all of them were milk floats. At that point there were approximately 40,000 of them in active daily use, running quiet electric rounds through the early morning streets of almost every town and city in Britain, delivering glass bottles to doorsteps before the household was awake. By 2010, the number had fallen to around 15,000. By 2020, the traditional milk round was a rarity. Here's what happened, and why it matters more than a story about dairy delivery might suggest.
What the milk float actually was
The milk float was the product of a practical problem. Milk delivery required a vehicle that could make hundreds of short stops along a fixed route, that could be driven at low speed without constantly engaging gears, that was quiet enough not to disturb sleeping households at five in the morning, and that didn't produce exhaust fumes. The internal combustion engine was poorly suited to all of these requirements. The battery-electric vehicle was ideally suited to all of them.
The first commercial electric milk floats were introduced by Express Dairies in 1932 following successful trials in London. By the 1950s they were the standard delivery vehicle for the British dairy industry. By 1970, production was running at approximately 2,000 new vehicles per year, and 80 percent of the milk sold in Britain was delivered by electric float to the doorstep.
The design was beautifully appropriate to its purpose. Open-sided for easy access, low to the ground for loading crates, with a sliding door that could be left open while moving. The milkman, or increasingly the milkwoman, would often leave the vehicle before it had fully stopped, deliver the bottles in the time it took to roll the few metres to the next house, and step back aboard without breaking stride. It was a system of extraordinary efficiency that had evolved over decades to match the physical requirements of the round exactly.
The thing that killed it
The milk float didn't die because the technology was inadequate. It died because the business model around it collapsed. Supermarkets, which began selling milk from the 1960s onwards and gained decisive market power through the 1970s and 80s, could sell milk cheaper than doorstep delivery could. They could also sell it in plastic cartons rather than glass bottles, which were cheaper to produce and didn't require collection and washing. By 1975, 94 percent of UK milk was sold in glass bottles. By 2016 that figure had fallen to three percent.
The social change was equally significant. As more women entered the workforce through the 1970s and 80s, the pattern of household life that had made doorstep delivery natural, someone at home in the morning to bring in the bottles before they warmed in the sun, became less reliable. Buying milk in the weekly supermarket shop was more convenient for households that were no longer home in the morning.
The result was a death spiral. Fewer customers made each round less economical. Rounds were consolidated, covering more ground, requiring faster vehicles. The limited speed of the electric float, typically 15 to 20 miles per hour, became a genuine operational constraint when rounds expanded. Dairies began replacing floats with diesel vans, which were faster and more flexible but significantly louder, more polluting, and much less suited to the stop-start nature of the work.
The irony of the timing
The milk float was electric decades before the electric vehicle became a technology of consequence in the wider automotive world. The lead-acid battery technology it used was genuinely functional for its purpose: a full laden float could carry between 1,500 and 2,000 kilograms and travel 60 to 80 miles on a single overnight charge. In the 1960s and 70s, Britain's milk float fleet was not just the world's largest electric vehicle operation; it was a demonstration that electric transport worked at scale, was economically viable, and could replace internal combustion engines in appropriate applications.
The transition away from milk floats towards diesel vans, driven by economics rather than technology, meant that this demonstration was abandoned at exactly the moment when its lessons might have been most valuable. The Milk Float Revival project at Hagerty has documented some of the efforts to keep original floats running and convert them to modern lithium-ion batteries, which removes the DC/AC incompatibility that made charging difficult and significantly increases their range and payload.
What was actually lost
Beyond the dairy economics and the electric vehicle technology, what was lost was a particular quality of morning. The sound of the float was quiet, a low electric hum and the clink of glass. It came in the early dark, made its deliveries, and left. Benny Hill's 1971 hit "Ernie (The Fastest Milkman in the West)" was a comic tribute to a figure who was genuinely familiar in almost every neighbourhood in Britain. The milkman knew the street. The street knew the milkman. It was one of those daily infrastructures of community life that become visible only when they've gone.
