ACT I · THE STORY

Why this Bathing Machine?

Before the beach hut, there was the bathing machine. Wheeled into the shallows by horse or by hand, it let Victorian sea-bathers change in private and step down the little ladder straight into the water, unseen in their bathing dress by the crowds on the shore.

Brighton, Scarborough, Llandudno: every seaside town had a row of them, rattling along the tideline at the height of summer.

As fashions changed, they gradually disappeared from Britain's beaches, but for more than a century this was what a trip to the seaside actually looked like.

Every wheel, panel and step has been carefully recreated from an original sketch, developed into a wooden model that preserves one of Britain's most distinctive seaside traditions.

Every Curious Rabbit model is individually made to order in our Welsh workshop, carefully assembled and finished by hand. From the first cut to the final brushstroke, each one is created to be displayed, used and enjoyed for years to come.
